About Me

 

I'm a writer and I specialise in writing about movies; particularly if they're animated or visual effects-intensive.  My writing has been published in the magazines Empire, Moviescope, 3DArtist, 3DWorld, ImagineFX and the Times Higher Education. Outside of my writing about movies, I occasionally write about literature and rural subjects. My work has been published on these subjects in Country Walking, Landscape and Resurgence magazine.

My most recent books have been Bond: Photographed by Terry O'Neill,  Through Her Lens: The Stories Behind the Photography of Eva Sereny and The Year of the Geek. In spring 2019, Aurora Metro book published my book: Media Labs: What You Need To Know.

As a scriptwriter I co-wrote the short film Chasing Cotards, which premiered at the IMAX in London before then playing at a number of North American film festivals in 2011. Currently I am developing several feature-length screenplays. In 2017 I worked as Assistant Producer with Whistledown radio productions on a documentary feature piece for BBC Radio 3.

 

For the stage, I have had three plays commissioned; each of them for young audiences. Each production toured regionally in the UK. Each project deployed puppetry to bring the stories to life and these collaborations included work with About Face in Herefordshire and Rage Arts in Birmingham. This work very much grew out of the community arts and filmmaking work that I had been engaged with since 1997.

 

Alongside my writing work I teach and I'm available to give talks about aspects of film and about screenwriting. Currently , I am a Visiting Lecturer at the London Film School, contributing to their MA Screenwriting programme. I have delivered lectures for the BFI, the British Library and the British Council amongst other organisations. I have taught Film Studies and screenwriting at a number of universities; including the University of Warwick and the University of Sussex.
